Just prior to the announcement of the Connect313 initiative, I was working with community partners (companies, nonprofits, educational institutions) to develop an initiative to help bring broadband internet access to every household in Michigan. Once Connect313 was announced, I quickly saw the opportunity to achieve my org’s mission more effectively. My expertise is in nonprofit operational/process development and my personal mission is synonymous to the mission of Connect313.
Why are you interested in serving on a Connect 313 Committee? What do you hope to gain from the experience?
My goal is to ensure the needs of the people at the center of Connect313’s work is reflected and prioritized throughout every decision. I have spent the entire pandemic organizing individuals across the country to address issues in underserved communities through my nonprofit, Minority Freedom Community Fund. I’m also a Detroit native and the majority of my family and friends remain in the city and most are directly impacted by the digital divide so this is a very personal battle for me. I have participated in several of the planning meetings for Connect313 and have been impressed and motivated by the work so far.
What is your vision for bridging the digital divide in Detroit?
My vision for bridging the digital divide is to leverage my skills, connections and resources to help uplift the work so that we can develop a scalable model for city’s across the country struggling with this important need. Developing a model that is: sustainable, inclusive, and human-centered will be my focus.
