Nominee for Devices and Connectivity

What is your company and title?

123.net. Inc. CEO and The Detroit Internet Exchange CEO

Tell us why you’re best for the Devices and Connectivity committee!

My name is Dan Irvin. Please support my nomination to the Devices and Connectivity Committee at Connect 313. My unique and specialized background and skillset make me an ideal candidate for ensuring that all Detroiters have access to quality devices and high-speed internet. Specifically, I have extensive experience building networks in Michigan as the founder and CEO of 123.Net, and I can use this experience to ensure that each community receives the best available devices and connectivity.

Working with Detroiters over the past several years has developed my understanding of the increasing and essential connectivity needs the city and surrounding communities maintain. This knowledge has inspired a passion for bringing Equitable Internet Access to all Detroiters. By working with Connect 313 in support of their values, mission, and values, I want to ensure that my passion is converted to a meaningful change and difference for the community.

The reality is that to make all Detroiters connected will take several years and dollars, but I believe that with my nonprofit and corporate experience and determination that time and cost will be used effectively and efficiently in delivering devices and connectivity to our community.I have been using the internet before it was called the internet. My first experience using the internet was while working on a Department of Defense project, which involved developing software for General Electric aircraft engines and communicating with the Navy via the internet.

For the last 25 years I have been the CEO of 123.Net, Inc., a Michigan based company that builds hundreds of miles of fiber every year and has over 3000 miles of fiber in Michigan. We also operate world class data centers and a phone company. We do business with Google, Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, Netflix, Amazon, almost all the internet carriers in Michigan, the automotive and medical industries, many municipalities and thousands of internet centric businesses in Michigan. I am the founder and primary owner of 123.Net and actively serve as its President and CEO. I studied Physics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI and hold a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Prior to starting what would become 123.Net, I developed controls software for jet engines at General Electric Aircraft Engines.

Why are you interested in serving on a Connect 313 Committee? What do you hope to gain from the experience?

For several years my company has been working with the Equitable Internet Initiative (EII) and currently donate GigE connections to aid in their mission. I am excited to continue to support them and have “signed up” to help them bring fiber to a Detroit neighborhood. You can learn more about the EII here: https://www.detroitcommunitytech.org/eii/ https://mitechnews.com/internet-of-things/123-net-helps-bring-broadband-connections-to-40-percent-of-metro-detroit-without-internet/

What is your vision for bridging the digital divide in Detroit?

My vision is to make our businesses and communities the best connected on the planet.

About 4 years ago, my partners and I started the Detroit Internet Exchange (DET-iX). The DET-iX is a non-profit where networks can exchange traffic for free, and providers typically experience over 60% of their internet traffic demands satisfied for free on this exchange. It is currently the 12th largest exchange in the US and handles more traffic than most countries. The DET-iX expects to handle over a terabit of traffic per second next year. You can learn more about the Exchange at https://www.detroitix.com/
